To make this low calorie red velvet latte you will need:
Unsweetened almond milk – I always, always recommend using unsweetened almond milk in beverages because it is so low in calories and tastes great. You can opt for any milk you would like but the calories will be higher depending on which you use.
Espresso or brewed coffee – Espresso works best to compliment the flavors of this drink. You can opt for powdered espresso too. You can also use freshly brewed coffee.
Unsweetened cocoa powder – Unsweetened cocoa powder has a great, intense chocolaty flavor without any added sugars.
0 calorie brown sugar – You can use any 0 calorie sweetener for this recipe but I always recommend this brown sugar replacement. It tastes so good and doesn’t leave any of that bitter aftertaste a lot of sweeteners do. Plus, it works great for hot drinks as it dissolves and again, no weird aftertaste!!
Vanilla extract – Red velvet without vanilla??
Red food coloring – To add the classic red velvet color!
Oat milk foam (optional) – This is optional but oat milk – especially barista oat milk – foams up really well and creates a delicious, creamy foam which is a great low calorie alternative to whipped cream!
How to make a low calorie red velvet latte
- Mix together the espresso/brewed coffee, vanilla extract, cocoa powder and sweetener until everything has dissolved and transfer to desired mug/glass.
- Mix together the milk and food coloring in a milk frother. You can either use an electric milk frother that heats the milk up or you can warm up your milk in the microwave and then use a handheld frother.
- Pour the milk over the coffee and mix to combined. Enjoy!
LOW CALORIE ‘WHIP’ CREAM
If you’re someone who loves adding whip cream to their hot beverages, this is a perfect super low calorie alternative. It is made with steamed milk and adds an extra layer of creaminess and really elevates this low calorie red velvet latte!
- Warm up 50 ml of any milk of your choosing, make sure it is piping hot. I used barista oat.
- Using a milk frother, whisk the milk until its super foamy and thick – that’s it!
